In the elections in May the Indian National Congress (INC) won a decisive victory and Manmohan Singh’s second-term government has been launched. President Singh receives much support from the citizens for taking on tough challenges and initiating substantive measures such as selling stakes in state-owned companies, deregulation of the oil industry, and the sale of state-owned enterprises. Yet, the government faces challenges as in its relationship with Pakistan and conflicts like that in Kashmir.

Mr. Siddharth Varadarajan, one of the most eminent journalists in India, will talk about the challenges and prospects of the new Indian government, including the Indian economy in this time of global economic crisis and the future of India-Japan relations.

Siddharth Varadarajan:
Reported on a broad range of topics such as the NATO war against Yugoslavia, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq and the crisis in Kashmir. His articles are often quoted both in India and abroad. In 2005, the United Nations Correspondents Association awarded him the Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize Silver Medal for Print Journalism for a series of articles on Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency. He edited Gujarat: The Making of a Tragedy, Penguin Books, 2002.

Yamazaki Yasuyo:
Former President of Goldman Sachs Asset Management Japan Limited and Partner of Goldman Sachs and Co. Currently the representative of the think tank Yamazaki Associates and the president of the Sun-based Economy Association, which promotes an economy and society based on solar energy.
