Hudson Shad―Five-man Voice Ensemble
First Performance in Tokyo
An American, five-man voice ensemble, "Hudson Shad” officially debuted in 1992. They are a group similar to the legendary German group, The Comedian Harmonists, and were formed as a tribute to the latter group's music.
Hudson Shad has always been interested in exploring many genres of music, which has led them to develop a wide variety of programs―from classical opera to popular songs. This time they have developed a special program for their first performance in Tokyo that features “Mack the Knife” from Kurt Weill’s opera, film music like “As Time Goes By” and “Over the Rainbow,” and various songs from the repertoire of Sinatra, Martin, Crosby and Astaire such as “New York, New York,” “Hello Dolly,” “Volare,” and more. Please join us and enjoy the concert !

Saving Your Life With Art:
The Role of Contemporary Art in addressing Socio-political Challenges
under "Glocalization" in Asia
The Asia Leadership Fellows Program (ALFP) is now taking place from September 10 to November 9. ALFP is a joint undertaking by the International House of Japan and the Japan Foundation, designed to invite leading public intellectuals in Asia and consolidate their interdisciplinary network beyond geopolitical and socio-cultural boundaries through dialogue/discussion to cope with global as well as regional challenges faced by civil society in Asia. Academyhills has invited Bina Sarkar Ellias, one of the ALFP fellows, to give a talk on art.
Connected and empowered as the world is today by instant communication
and a wealth of information resources, it is ironic that its citizens
are increasingly divided by ethnic, religious and cultural differences.
With economic globalization and local awareness--so-called "Glocalization,"
increasingly accelerating in Asia and other parts of the world, what is
the role of contemporary art in addressing these socio-political issues?
Introducing her work as editor of "Gallerie," Bina Sarkar Ellias
will talk on these global as well as regional challenges. In this context,
the issues of freedom and censorship and tolerance of the 'other' will
be explored as well.
Speaker: Bina Sarkar Ellias, Editor and Publisher of Gallerie
magazine
Moderator: Fumio Nanjo, Director, Mori Art Museum

[Public Symposium] Shifting Terrain: The Domestic Politics of the US Military Presence in the Asia Pacific
The research team of the East-West Center project, Shifting Terrain:
The Domestic Politics of the US Military Presence in Asia, will discuss
their findings from a two-year study of the local and national politics
surrounding US military forces in Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.
The national histories and politics of the US military presence in three
of Asia's most dynamic societies have been shaped in large part by their
alliance with the United States. In Japan, the concentration of US military
forces on the small island of Okinawa has long occasioned considerable
tension between the prefecture and the national government in Tokyo. The
most recent gubernatorial election in Okinawa reveals yet again the complexity
of interests engaged in both sustaining and opposing the presence of foreign
troops, and echoes similar domestic responses to the US military presence
in South Korea and the Philippines. The research team will also discuss
the common political dynamics that shape policymaking in all three Asian
societies that host U.S. forces on their soil.
In cooperation with The International House of Japan, this program is made possible by the financial support of The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership and The Japan-US. Friendship Commission.
