IHJ Membership Bylaws

(effective as of June 24, 2010)

The International House has adopted this membership system in order to most effectively enlist the intellectual and financial resources of its members in its furthering of international cultural exchange.

I. Categories of Membership and Qualifications

1. Individual Members including Term Members: Individuals of standing in various fields of international exchange who desire to contribute financially to or to co-operate intellectually in the activities of the International House of Japan may, upon application seconded by two members in good standing and approval by the Membership Committee appointed by the Board of Trustees and upon payment of prescribed initial donation fee and dues, become Individual Members.

2. Corporate Members: Corporations endorsing the aims and activities of the House may upon invitation become Corporate Members, paying specified dues. Corporate Members may name one representative for each unit of sustaining dues subscribed.

3. Special Members: Special Member qualifications are given for a limited term to individuals desiring to cooperate with the House activities upon invitation of the Board.

4. Library Members: Graduate students and individuals on the staff of a university or research institute who desire to use the House library may, with the written recommendation of a member in good standing or the head of their home institution and upon payment of prescribed dues, become Library Members.

II. Privileges

1. Members are to receive announcements of and are welcome to attend lectures and other events being held at the International House.

2. Members except, for Term Members, may recommend applicants for membership and provide introductions for persons desiring to make use of House facilities. In the event, however, of undesirable conduct or failure to pay bills on the part of any individual recommended or introduced, such right to recommend or introduce may be withdrawn.

3. Members and their spouses may use International House facilities at a special reduced rate.

4. Except as otherwise provided, members are to receive the IHJ Annual Report and the IHJ Bulletin free of charge.

5. Libary Members are granted library privileges but none of the privileges listed above.


III. Initial Donation

1. Applicants for membership shall upon acceptance as Individual Members pay an initial donation as specified hereinafter.

a.Members resident in Japan :400,000 yen or 200,000 yen (by choice)
b.Members not resident in Japan :300,000 yen or 100,000 yen (by choice)
Regardless of the amount, there will be no difference in a member's privileges and rights.

2. Persons 45 years or less: The amounts above or 100,000 yen (for residents) and 50,000 yen (for non-residents) by choice.

3. Term Members:   50,000 yen
Term Membership can be used just once, and is transferable to Individual Membership upon payment of the balance of the initial donation.

4. Special Members and Library Members are exempt from payment of an initial donation.

5. Corporate Members are exempt from payment but still are asked to give a voluntary donation to the House (200,000 yen for a single unit).

Resident members, both individual and corporate, who pay the initial donation to the House will be provided with a certificate of payment for a Japanese tax exemption.


IV. Dues

1. Individual Members
     a. At the anniversary of election to membership, annual dues are payable in advance as follows:

Members resident in Japan: 30,000 yen
Members not resident in Japan: 15,000 yen
  • The above notwithstanding, members who have reached the age of eighty-five and have been members for twenty-five years or more shall be exempt from payment of dues. (This will not be applied to the present members whose fee exemption has already taken effect, even if they are less than 85 years old now.)
  • Persons desiring individual membership for life may so inform the Board and upon approval of this election dues will be discharged for life upon a lump sum payment of 1,000,000 yen.
     b. Term Members:    60,000 yen (lump sum payment for two years)

2. Corporate Members:    A single unit of sustaining dues is 180,000 yen a year. Up to ten units may be subscribed, payment being made in semiannual, annual, or decennial increments.

3. Representative nominated by the corporate members:    No dues

4. Special Members:    No dues

5. Library Members:    6,000 yen a year


V. Termination

1. Members desiring to terminate their membership must so inform the House Membership Office in writing.

2. Upon the death of a member, date of death is the date of record for termination of membership


VI. Disqualification

Any one of the following may be cause to disqualify individuals for the membership.

1. Fraudulent or false statements in application for membership.
2. Delinquency in payment of dues for one year.
3. Failure to pay bills for room charges, dining charges, or other obligations due on House accounts within six months of date of bills rendered.
4. Violation of House rules or regulations on two or more occasions.
5. Conduct unbecoming a House member. Conduct being contrary to the House's sprit and mission.
