IHJ Membership System

The International House of Japan is a working international community, engaged directly in a free exchange and interaction of ideas to foster a climate favorable to intellectual cooperation. The House membership is open to persons and corporations in various cultural and social fields, who desire to contribute to the activities explained in the Program Activities section.

Individual Members, including Term Members

Individuals of standing in scholarship, the arts, or other fields, who desire to contribute financially to or to cooperate in the activities of the House, may upon application seconded by two members in good standing and approval by the Membership Committee become Individual Members.

Initiation fees
Annual dues
Resident ¥400,000 or ¥200,000 ¥30,000
Non-resident ¥300,000 or ¥100,000 ¥15,000

The above notwithstanding, any individual 45 years old or less, can select 100,000 yen as a resident member or 50,000 yen as a non-resident member instead of the higher amount for the initiation fee, while the prescribed annual dues are mandatory: 30,000 yen for residents and 15,000 yen for non-residents.

Term Members

Term Membership can be useful for foreign expatriates stationed in Japan for a few years or persons who wish to try out House membership. It can be chosen just once, though a one-year extension is possible one time only. The applicant should be seconded by two members in good standing and be approved by the Membership Committee. The membership is to be transferable to Individual Membership upon payment of the balance of the initiation fee.

Corporate Members

Corporations endorsing the aims and activities of the House may upon invitation become Corporate Members, paying specified dues. Corporate Members have no initiation fees and pay 180,000 yen in annual dues per unit (member corporations can name one individual for each unit), while we ask new corporate members to make a voluntary donation of 200,000 yen (tax exempt in Japan) at joining.

Special Members

Special Member qualifications are given for a limited term to individuals desiring to cooperate with the House activities upon invitation of the Board.

Library Members

Graduate students and individuals on the staff of a university or research institute who desire to use the House library may, with the written recommendation of a member in good standing or the head of their home institution, become Library Members. Annual dues are 6,000 yen.

Privileges

Members not including Library Members are to be provided the following privileges: members are welcome to attend lectures and other events; members are to receive the IHJ Annual Report and the IHJ Bulletin; members not including term members may recommend applicants for membership and can provide introductions for persons desiring to make use of House facilities; and members and their spouses may use the House facilities at a special reduced rate.

Designated Public Benefit Organization authorized by the Japanese Government

Having been authorized by the Japanese Government as a Designated Public Benefit Organization in 1989, contributions to the House by domestic corporations and individuals are tax-exempt in Japan. In the U. S., corporate and individual contributions to the House are tax-exempt when made through the American Friends of I House.
