Background

The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission’s U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Program is currently seeking a part-time Arts Coordinator to be based at the International House of Japan in Tokyo.

Since 1978, the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) have worked with the Agency for Cultural Affairs in Japan (Bunkacho) and the International House of Japan (I-House) to organize the United States-Japan Creative Artists’ Program. Each year five leading U.S.-based artists, representing all genres, are selected from the United States and are provided funding to spend three to five months in Japan. This residency program allows the artists to research and experience both the traditional and contemporary artistic milieu of Japan. Artists are free to live anywhere in the country to pursue activities of greatest relevance to their creative process. The International House of Japan provides in-depth orientation materials, expert advice and professional contacts, as well as logistical support during the residency period.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work closely with the Senior Arts Coordinator to:

  • Plan and prepare for the Creative Artist Fellows’ arrival in Japan
  • Plan and moderate public forums (Artist Forums) featuring the Creative Artists Fellows; provide Japanese-English consecutive interpretation, as needed
  • Produce written communications in English for public release as well as internal reporting
  • Provide intellectual and logistical support for a new artistic exchange featuring U.S.-Japan artistic collaboration during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Eligibility to work legally in Japan
  • Proficiency in English and in Japanese. Speaking, reading, listening and writing skills
  • Three or more years of experience working in an office
  • Demonstrated flexibility and collaboration with colleagues
  • Familiarity with a broad range of contemporary American art and significant experience with the artistic community in Japan. The ideal candidate must be willing to share their professional artistic contacts with the participating U.S.-Japan Creative Artist Fellows.
  • Digital media fluency (Office, Excel, E-mail, and SNS)
  • Preferred Qualifications and Expectations

  • Digital media skills, including but not limited to Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, WordPress
  • Experience with consecutive interpretation from English to Japanese and vice versa
  • Working Hours

    The Arts Programs Coordinator must commit to a minimum of 12 hours a week at the International House of Japan. Additionally, there will be five Artists Forums during the year, which will require working late into the evening.

    Salary

    ¥1,200,000/year paid on an hourly basis. Commuting expenses will also be provided.
