JAZU HARLEM is the national jazz museum in Harlem’s special project designed to celebrate the vibrant and evolving legacy of jazz music, intertwining the cultural tapestries of historic Harlem, New York city and Japan.

As part of this project, a special concert and talk event will be held next month at the International House of Japan.
On the day of the event, you will enjoy a wonderful performance by Marshall McDonald Quartet and a talk on jazz and cultural exchange with histrical architecture and garden of I-House.

Player: Marshall McDonald

Marshall McDonald is a 30 year veteran of the New York Jazz Scene and plays on 6 Grammy Nominated recordings.
Marshall is best recognized for his over 20 year association in the Lead Alto Chair with The Count Basie Orchestra, and can be found on these two recent recordings: All About That Basie (Grammy Nomination), and Ella 100: Live at The Apollo.
His career includes a 10-year stint with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and playing and recording soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and flute with Paquito D’Rivera and The United Nation Orchestra. He played Baritone Saxophone on Mr. D’Rivera’s Latin Grammy-Winning album Tropicana Nights.
He began his studies with 10 years of Classical Clarinet at Carnegie-Mellon University with William Balawadjer.
Other career highlights include clarinet solos with The Duke Ellington Orchestra and performances at Carnegie Hall with Nancy Wilson, Lionel Hampton and Seth McFarland and the cast of Family Guy. Mr. McDonald has performed at Blue Note New York, Blue Note Tokyo, Blue Note Fukuoka, Birdland New York, Sydney Opera House, The North Sea Jazz Festival and The Nice Jazz Festival.
Known for his multi-reed abilities, he has also played and recorded on Baritone sax with Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya.
He has performed with Charli Persip, Illinois Jacquet, Frank Foster, Chico O’Farrill, Tony Bennett, Nancy Wilson, Bobby Caldwell, The Temptations, The Four Tops and Aretha Franklin amongst others.

Lolita Jackson MBE is the Executive Director of Sustainable Cities at Sustainable Development Capital LLP, a multibillion-pound climate investment firm. She is the link to governments around the world, also working on business development and origination.
Lolita is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the Master of Environmental Studies Program, Senior Advisor at Penn Perry World House, a member of the British American Project U.S. Advisory Board, a GlobalScot, a board member of the National Tartan Week Committee, a US-Japan Leadership Program Fellow, and President of the Penn Alumni Class of 1989. She was named to the City & State Energy & Environment Power 100 list for 2022 and was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2021.
Lolita is a professional singer, having performed on four continents, at Carnegie Hall and at Satin Doll jazz club in Roppongi.
