The International House of Japan (“I-House”) was established on August 27, 1952, under the leadership of Shigeharu Matsumoto and John D. Rockefeller III, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation and other private institutions and individuals. Matsumoto and Rockefeller believed that promoting greater understanding of diverse cultures and values was the key to improving international relations after World War II.
On the occasion of our 70th anniversary on August 27, 2022, we are reembracing our roots with the aim of making a greater global impact as a center of intellectual exchange in the Asia-Pacific region. In order to fulfill our mission “to contribute to building a free, open, and sustainable future through intellectual dialogue, policy research, and cultural exchange with a diverse world,” we are implementing a variety of programs in commemoration of our 70th anniversary.
The Nitobe Fellowships for Japanese Social Scientists “The Nitobe Fellowship Program”
Over a period of 32 years from 1976 to 2008, a total of 170 carefully selected fellows were dispatched to institutions of higher education and research in more than 20 countries around the world. Upon returning to Japan, they have played important roles in various fields such as academia, education, and policy-making, not only in Japan but also overseas.
This series focuses on what the Fellows have accomplished in their respective fields and how the fellowship impacted on their professional careers, as well as their personal lives.
70th Anniversary Logo
I-House has announced a new logo to commemorate its 70th anniversary.
Shaped like a dove, a symbol of humanity’s desire for peace, the logo can also be seen as two overlapping hands—a reference to interaction among different people from around the world, with the seven “fingers” representing the 70 years since I-House’s establishment.
